What is groundeffect? What is the headwind component for a landing on Runway 18 if the tower reports the wind as 215° at 30 knots? Groundeffect is most likely to result in which problem? 187 knots 162 knots 165 knots Correct! It reduces climb performance. a higher-than-normal angle of attack.
Vortex size is also affected by proximity to the ground. If youre flying low enough to be in groundeffect, the vortex isnt able to fully develop. This lateral movement takes place at a speed of about two or three knots. As at higher altitudes, the vortex movement near the ground is affected by crosswinds.
The prototype lifted off, hovered and flew at a speed of 40 knots before landing. Once stable in groundeffect, the pilot shut down EPU1 (left-side outboard) to simulate the performance in the case of an engine failure. The pilot then increased acceleration with a target of seven knotsground speed.
However, perhaps the safest response for everyone involved would have been the following: Rather than trying to climb with the tow plane, I should have stayed in groundeffect while communicating the request for a greater airspeed. Staying in groundeffect protects the glider from a stall because of lower induced drag.
The airspeed indicator registered 55 knots, close to the Cessna 172s stall speed. Just before touching down, I checked my airspeed and the pit in my stomach deepened: 85 knots far above the 172s normal landing speed of 65 knots. Time seemed to freeze as I floated in groundeffect.
Hold this extra power as you enter groundeffect. Low-wing aircraft perform better in groundeffect because of the wing’s proximity to the ground. Once you enter groundeffect, too much speed will cause the aircraft to float or balloon. It is the safest and smartest decision.
The stall warning horn sounds at least 5 knots above the actual stall speed. Since you need to fly without triggering the warning, select a target airspeed of about 2 to 5 knots more. Your target airspeed should be 5 knots above the speed that triggers the stall warning horn. Turbulent air will require a larger airspeed margin.
Regent Viceroy The Coast Guard has approved crewed testing of the wing-in-ground-effect Regent Viceroy seaglider and the company is anticipating a speedy trip to certification. The Russians have been dabbling in ground-effect aircraft (or boats) for decades and have made some huge examples.
Viceroy is designed to combine the speed of an aircraft (cruising at 180 mph or 156 knots) with the functionality and low operating cost of a boat. It will serve almost exclusively coastal regions and use existing dock infrastructure, flying 20 to 30 feet above the water using groundeffect.
An incomplete summary description of FASF is whether the airplane made it out of groundeffect. That phenomenon is best named Failure to Achieve Sustained Flight (FASF). This is more theoretical than practical for visual AOA, but can affect some proposals such as a general aviation stick shaker. No math required.
With as much as 25 knots of tailwind, we made the flight from Sodus to Alton Bay in only two hours. Unfortunately, this also meant meager ground speeds topping out around 85 knots. Lake Winnisquam with Lake Winnipesaukee in the distance. I clicked off HAL, preferring to hand fly in the bumps hurled at us by the terrain.
This is consistent with Rick’s report, which referenced 9 knots of wind. Note that a 43 knot gust from a direction of 190 degrees was measured at 17:39, one minute after the accident (provided that the time stamp is accurate). The ADSB trace shows Shmulik’s ground speed of 92 kt as he began his final turn.
We routinely taxi at 1200 rpm due to the low spray…[we] can cruise at 10 knots” in displacement mode, something a Goose can’t do. Early on a speed restriction of 130 knots was applied as a flutter issue. This was resolved on the kit version and led to cruising at 50% power and 120 knots, which proved to be the Gweduck’s sweet spot.
