by Gustin Robinson, FAA CFI-I ASEL The body needs oxygen to regulate bodily functions and supply the brain with the power to process information. As pilots, we often fly at altitudes where the oxygen supply to our bodies is limited. Many student pilots have heard of §91.211 in the far/aim , but what exactly does it mean, and why do we need to use supplemental oxygen?
It can be difficult to understand the path of becoming an airline pilot. You may be wondering what the required steps are and if you can go straight to the airlines after the completion of training. Airlines require you to have 1500 flight hours before flying with them. Therefore, you will need to build flight time after you complete training which helps you obtain an estimated 300 hours.

While companies haven’t started canceling their Zoom and Teams accounts just yet, the need for such services may be diminishing as signs point strongly to a return of business travel. According to a September 2022 report from TripActions , business trip bookings for fall are up nearly six times, year-over-year. Meanwhile, following a flat summer, travel spend rose 27% in August, with another 30% increase projected for September.

A Family Story About 20 years ago I was flying freight out of Burbank California and decided to stop in and see my grandparents who happened to live close to the airport. They were always glad to see me and much to my surprise the topic of conversation would lead a lasting impression in my brain. So my grandfather somehow decided he was going to tell me his version of aviation history from his perspective from being in the war.

Not every day we get the chance to pass under the rainbow arc just on the final approach. Looks like the autumn is starting here as well, some precipitations will be coming, which is good after all those dry months. Look at this amazing cloud formation (cumulus congestus) and the squalls and rain down there… Cumulus congestus above the TFS airport It’s not the usual view we are used to here at the south of Tenerife… But we can’t make the weather :-D.

A few weeks ago I had a scary situation when towing fully ballasted behind a Piper Pawnee. I had my camera running and published a short instructional video about the incident. I hope that it helps others avoid similar situations in the future. Here is the video: The comments indicate that these incidents are relatively common and occur most frequently when the tow pilot is used to pulling very light gliders that only require a low tow speed.

Summer is now over, but the summer travel boom we’ve experienced these past few months isn’t going anywhere. This summer, we saw surged demand for travel, for which major airlines and operators seemed to have been unprepared. Summer is traditionally our busiest season as our clients look to spend more time away from cities, to destinations like Nantucket , Martha’s Vineyard , and Newport , and this season was no exception.

I am often asked what areas applicants struggle the most on, and where most failures occur. While the answer to this question ranges dramatically from the type of exam to the student, it usually begins with a threat that leads to an error, and eventually an undesired aircraft state and/or exceedance from the ACS or PTS standard. While the concept of Threat and Error Management is somewhat foreign to the new private pilot, it applies very well to our daily operations and I see it in action on a r

There’s been a lot of interest in my recent accident analysis “ Invisible Trap Kills Glider Pilot – How To Avoid Microbursts.” Within days it has been read by more than 5000 people, a significant number for our relatively small community. I also received a lot of feedback and questions, some public, some private. Most were quite insightful and thought provoking and I’d like to thank everyone for the engaging discussion.

Like lawyers gunning for partner or professors aspiring to tenure, the ultimate career goal of many professional pilots is to fly for a major airline or corporate jet operator. The work to get there is hard and the investment of time and money steep, but the rewards are worth it with a great salary, nice pension, and an undeniable aura of “cool” that will draw interest from others for the rest of one’s life.

When I begin my briefings with applicants, I often begin with stating that the ACS is the standard. Sometimes I have students and flight schools asking me how I want to see certain maneuvers, and I always point them to FAA published materials to answer their question. There is no certain “way” that I want to see a maneuver – if the maneuver is compliant with the ACS and the applicant demonstrates proficiency, risk management, and good judgement – then it is satisfactory.
