A LATAM Airlines Boeing 777-300 has suffered a tailstrike as it departed from Milan Airport. Having continued with the takeoff, the aircraft continued its climb-out and dumped fuel before making a safe return to the airport 70 minutes later. Southwest was a news machine last week. After posting a bad quarter with an even worse outlook , it announced redeyes and most importantly, the introduction of assigned seating along with an extra legroom section. This is all good — well, except for the current results and outlook — but we still don’t know much about how this is going to be implemented.
Early Friday morning, we saw a major global IT outage , impacting all kinds of industries, including many airlines. In the United States, all of the “big three” US carriers — American, Delta, and United — were impacted by this. What’s interesting to see is how inconsistent the recovery has been between airlines. Delta underperforms peers with recovery FlightAware publishes data on flight cancelations and delays, and it’s interesting to look at how that has played out over the past couple of days
Many carriers were brought to their knees yesterday due to a software outage at technology company Microsoft. Some of the world's largest carriers have canceled flights, planes grounded, and are reverting to old-school techniques to check-in and board aircraft. However, the world's largest low-cost carrier, Southwest , has been able to power through due to an operating system that is 32 years old.

I’m not big on “event roundup” analysis pieces so I was determined to avoid that pointless escape for opinion writers to which we all succumb at times. Nope, I was going to find the news from this AirVenture and blow it wide open for all to see. Of course, the topic was going to be the endlessly excruciating unleaded fuel issue, which I was sure was going to have something to discuss this time around.
A US-based travel agency is planning to revive the Pan American (Pan Am) brand for a short nostalgic transatlantic excursion in 2025 using a chartered Boeing 757. The company aims to provide an exclusive experience, recreating the defunct US airline’s classic routes but on an upmarket basis, using the narrow-bodied aircraft fitted with just 50 business class seats.
As I mentioned in my trip report last week , I flew into SFO on a recent trip to the Bay Area but back out of Oakland. This wasn’t by design, but since I knew they were both pretty easy options from the city, I felt comfortable choosing the best flight times/prices out of either airport. Once we settled on going into one and out of the other, I knew it would be worth a comparison post.

Southwest Airlines can’t seem to stay out of the news lately when it comes to concerning safety incidents. We can now add yet another near catastrophe to the list, and this might just be the scariest one we’ve seen so far… Southwest 737 MAX has near disaster on approach to Tampa This incident happened on Sunday, July 14, 2024, and involves Southwest Airlines flight WN425 , scheduled to fly from Columbus (CMH) to Tampa (TPA).
The major Italian contractor, Leonardo , has warned that developing the sixth-generation fighter jet will cost more and take longer than anticipated. The Global Combat Air Programme fighter (GCAP), otherwise known by the British name "Tempest," is one of the most consequential sixth-generation fighter jets in development outside of the US Air Force's NGAD fighter.

A court martial has fined Air Force Maj. Gen. Phillip Stewart $60,000 and confined him to Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas for six months after he flew a C-17 in low level maneuvers following a night of drinking. In the first court martial of its kind, a jury of eight generals, all of whom outranked Stewart, found him guilty of conduct unbecoming an officer and dereliction of duty by “assuming control” of the transport plane at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma during a trip in
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered that more than 2,600 Boeing 737 aircraft are checked, over concerns oxygen masks may not fully function during a depressurization event. The FAA said it was adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) after receiving “multiple reports of oxygen generators shifting out of position”. “Boeing has investigated the condition and found that the oxygen generator retention failures were caused by a failure of the pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) ma
Avianca was a slow-moving, bloated legacy carrier based in Colombia that had spread its wings around South America but not in a wise way. Then it went bankrupt, got new management, and the airline has completely transformed itself. Now, it has its eyes set on… Europe? Yep, Europe. And it’s an impressively deliberate plan that actually does fit well with the airline’s strengths.
An American Airlines jet had a pretty dramatic evacuation yesterday, after a passenger’s laptop reportedly caught fire. We always hear about the risk of lithium ion batteries, so here’s a case where it actually caused an issue. Fortunately it was caught on the ground… American jet evacuated as cabin fills with smoke This incident happened yesterday (Friday, July 12, 2024), and involves American Airlines flight AA2045, scheduled to fly from San Francisco (SFO) to Miami (MIA) at 12:17PM.

The City of Boulder, Colorado is taking the FAA to court saying a clause in its grant obligations to the agency is constitutional overreach. The city has already stopped accepting grants with an eye to closing the airport in 2040 when the last obligations reach their 20-year expiry but the FAA says it may never allow the airport to be closed. That’s because three grants, one of them from 65 years ago, were used to buy land for the airport and that triggers a clause that requires the airpor
Korean Air announced that it has renewed its cabin service procedure in light of rising cases of extreme turbulence on commercial flights. Since July 1, 2024, the South Korean flag carrier has wrapped up its in-flight services 40 minutes prior to landing on all medium to long-haul flights, 20 minutes earlier than the previous service policy. Korean Air believes that the 20-minute change will allow in-flight services to end before the airplane begins its descent to land, thereby minimizing the ri
As we discussed yesterday, in the long-haul market, premium upsell options have long been part of the game , but in the short-haul market, that has not been the case. It wasn’t all that long ago that airlines almost exclusively sold coach seats. Most of those people sitting in First Class were upgrades. This has changed dramatically, and the announcements of expanded premium offerings just keep coming.
Well, I’ve gotta be honest, this wasn’t on my airline partnership bingo card… Delta & Riyadh Air unveil strategic cooperation plans Delta and Riyadh Air have signed a strategic cooperation memorandum of understanding, with the goal of introducing a broad range of benefits for customers traveling between North America, Saudi Arabia, and beyond. As a reminder, Riyadh Air is Saudi Arabia’s ambitious new airline startup , which plans to launch flights in 2025.
When airlines or lessors order aircraft, the process goes through various stages, which is why you often see the same order discussed time and again. It starts when the customer floats the idea of buying a new aircraft and culminates years later when that aircraft operates its first commercial service, which in the case of Australian airline Jetstar was a gap of around ten years for its new Airbus A321LR fleet.

Given the strong, more than half-century association between the Martin Mars and the people of British Columbia, it is only logical that a Mars should remain preserved in the Canadian province following Coulson Aviation’s final retirement of the breed in recent years. As we reported in March, the British Columbia Aviation Museum succeeded in their bid to obtain Hawaii Mars (BuNo. 76823/ C-FLYL ), one of just two surviving examples of the behemoth flying boat.

The new Boeing 777 Freighters will see the airline’s available main deck cargo capacity increase by 30%. “Demand for our world-class product and services is growing exponentia
Just imagine this. You’re running Southwest Airlines, trying hard to fight off Elliott Investment Management’s desire to fire you and your board chair. It says you’ve missed out on a ton of revenue opportunities, and it’s time to change. What’s the last thing you want to see? Probably a miss on your revenue guidance. So it was last week — the last week of this very quarter — when Southwest announced that its Q2 revenue guidance was too rosy.
YouTuber Josh Cahill published an interesting video about a situation he encountered with Luxair, whereby he believes he was “scammed” out of lounge access, and later threatened by the airline. Cahill is no stranger to controversy — he was also threatened with a ban from Qatar Airways , while Aero Dili posted his passport information online. Josh Cahill’s Luxair lounge access drama YouTube flight reviewer Josh Cahill flew with Luxair from Berlin to Luxembourg to Paris, with a long layover enrout
One good SR-72 Darkstar AKA "SOB" (as in "Son of Blackbird," i.e. the SR-71 Blackbird, not the profane kind of "Son of.") deserves a timely follow-up. As I noted in my previous Simple Flying article on this still-hypothetical (at least officially) futuristic warbird, it not only captured the imagination of the Western moviegoing public but concurrently freaked out the top brass of Red China's People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) via its fictitiously embellished appearance in the 2022 box o

Boeing has started 777-9 certification flight trials with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The first of such tests took place on July 12, 2024, shortly after the manufacturer received the Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) from the FAA to conduct these flights. Sun Country is tired of carrying you self-loading cargo around for prices that are too low, so now it’s pivoting toward more cargo flying. Amazon likes this plan, and investors should too. But if you happen to like flying from Minneapolis to, say, Indianapolis, this might be bad news for you. In December 2019, Sun Country signed a deal to fly cargo around for Amazon using 12 Boeing 737-800 freighters.
