airBaltic has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate with Fokker Next Gen on the development of a clean-sheet airliner powered by liquid hydrogen, the Riga-based carrier announced on May 13, 2024. Fokker Next Gen aims to develop a hydrogen-powered airliner by 2035 able to carry between 120 and 150 passengers, and with a range of up to 2,500 km.

At American’s Investor Day two months ago, it started to create a justification for its focus on smaller cities using “network superiority” metrics. I wasn’t satisfied with those metrics, so in partnership with Raymond James, I built my own model. An Air Tanzania Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that was sent to Malaysia for maintenance in November 2023 remains in the Asian country after corrosion issues were discovered with the aircraft’s two Rolls-Royce engines. According to reports in local media, the aircraft involved (registered 5H-TCJ) has been grounded for almost eight months and is currently sitting without engines close to the disused low-cost carrier terminal at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL).

The CEO of Lufthansa Carsten Spohr has said that problems at Boeing this year have been “extremely annoying”, but he remains positive that the planemaker will bounce back. In an interview with Switzerland’s Neue Zuercher Zeitung , the head of Lufthansa Group commented on Boeing’s failings following the Alaska Airlines plug door blowout and the subsequent ramifications that have seen aircraft production drop.

Comprising the airline Emirates and the air services provider dnata, the group has achieved unprecedented profit, revenue, and cash reserves growth. A passenger is suing Delta Air Lines for $1 Million after he claimed that he suffered hip and rib injuries after an armrest gave way. The lawsuit , filed in California Southern District Court, detailed that the passenger, Joseph Hippensteel, was traveling with Delta to London-Heathrow Airport (LHR) from an undisclosed airport in California with a connection in Seattle Tacoma Airport (SEA) on May 16, 2022.

AutoFlight has successfully completed a flight test of its V2000CG Carry All, the autonomous cargo version of the two-ton Prosperity eVTOL. The flight took place on May 13, 2024, at Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), in China. It is the first real flight test of an eVTOL of this size at a Class 4F airport, the category that designates the largest airports, those capable of handling all types of aircraft.

Four flight attendants have been charged with allegedly smuggling drug money between the United States and the Dominican Republic. According to the US Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of New York, the flight attendants have been charged in connection with their “years-long participation in smuggling narcotics trafficking proceeds from the United States to the Dominican Republic on commercial flights”.

On May 10, 2024, Delta Air Lines commenced a new service between Dublin to Minneapolis-St Paul, joining Irish flag carrier Aer Lingus on the route between the Irish capital and the ‘Twin Cities’. The new daily flights link the two cities on a daily basis with Delta using Boeing 767-300ERs on the route. The flights depart Dublin Airport (DUB) at 1200 and arrive at Minneapolis-Saint Paul (MSP) at 15.35 local time (DL115).

easyJet pilots have reportedly rejected a pay rise that would have seen captain’s annual wages increase to almost £200,000 ($250k) by April 2025. Simple Flying had the privilege of visiting the Integrated Operations Center (IOC) of Qatar Airways , a modern facility situated on the landside area of Hamad International Airport. During our two-hour visit, we learned about three core functions of the building, although the Qatar Airways team informed us that there is much more to the building than we could discover in that amount of time.
