I did a checkride in 30 knot winds in the flatlands of Kansas, almost straight down the runway. Here’s a video of a 182 flipping in 30 knot winds at Las Vegas (with jet blast the deciding factor). I’ve landed in strong winds enough times that 30 knots can seem routine, as long as it’s reasonably aligned with the runway.

Worst case would’ve been the slat breaking apart further, or detaching completely, unlikely as that might be, but even this wouldn’t crash the plane, so long as the stabilizers or tail weren’t struck and badly damaged. A jetliner can land just fine this way — it just needs to do so at a higher speed, requiring more runway.

It’s looking very likely that Runway 06L/24R will begin a long term closure at 12:30am on Saturday September 9th. Runway 6R/24L will see both arrivals and departures. I was listening intently to the ASOS for wind or gusts, letting it repeat 5 or 6 times with the exact same report: 9 kts straight down the runway; no gusts. After we decided this, we heard a Challenger jet announce “Taxiing to 26 for takeoff”. That was the runway we would use to land. As we will learn, it was the whole issue.

Putting the front to our tails, we flew in IMC (instrument meteorological conditions) for 30 minutes before emerging under a clear blue sky. Final, runway 34, photographed from Two Six Romeo. We were cleared to land number four on runway 34 and asked to keep our speed up to accommodate a Pilatus behind us.

Sometimes the wind socks at both ends of the runway point in opposite directions! Once Shmulik was in the pattern the key thing that possibly could have helped him (besides a greater altitude) is a very high airspeed to get out of the sink and safeguard against the sudden tail wind. When the DC-9 landed on Rockliffe's 3,319 foot long runway, it was lightly loaded with minimum fuel to manage its momentum. It had what was then a novel feature, an adjustable tail plane to trim the machine fore and aft. That did not stop many of us on the tour from capturing pictures anyway. 1944 De Havilland Mosquito.
