A small Challenger 604 business jet flying at Flight Level 340 passed one thousand feet below an Airbus A380 flying the same route in the opposite direction.

Even though the plane is new to Austrian, its not a new jet. As you can see, the plane doesnt yet have the full Austrian livery, but instead has an all-white fuselage, except for the Austrian name written across the front of the plane, and the Austrian logo on the tail. So we finally deplaned at 2:25PM, still a bit ahead of schedule.

The description of the event clearly represents what was understood at the time: During the takeoff from RWY35L, the aircraft suffered a tail strike after the rotation. THE RED AND WHITE JET WENT BY WITHOUT A SOUND. The tail section, minus horizontal stabilizer, came from a crashed TF-104G that was found in an Ontario, California junkyard. Well, I was indicating 210 knots when I ejected and on my way out I was counting the rivets on the canopy bow. IMPOSSIBLE.

Putting the front to our tails, we flew in IMC (instrument meteorological conditions) for 30 minutes before emerging under a clear blue sky. We flew at 7,000 feet with as much as a 30 knot tailwind. Two jets and one piston aircraft were queued up to depart from the same runway when we arrived. Better safe than sorry.
