” As Eldridge began unhooking and disconnecting everything and slid the canopy back, the Corsair was slowing down and the torque of the 4360 had pulled the aircraft into a steep diving turn to the right. A microsecond later, Eldridge struck the horizontal stabilizer which broke his arm and his neck.

The chirping we heard was due to excess torque-related motion of the powerplant in the engine compartment. Ray later found that the nuts securing the remaining three mounts were insufficiently torqued by whomever mounted that engine before the Williamson Flying Club bought the airplane in 2021. It was undamaged, it just came apart.

The turbulent air hits the horizontal stabilizer, which causes a vibration that can be felt throughout the aircraft. Watch out for torque effect (especially if you are in high-powered aircraft) since the increase in power can cause the nose to yaw to the left. Buffeting is like flying in rough, choppy air.

Another advantage of the counter-rotating props is the elimination of torque roll. This is the tendency to dig in the left tip float during takeoff while countering engine torque. From the pilot’s seat it cruises near effortlessly and handles nimbly on land or water with a great combination of stability and modest control pressures.
