Over the last three years, The Bear has expressed great interest in visiting Alton Bay, the only FAA-authorized ice runway in the continental United States. A very brief 2022 season for the ice runway eliminated opportunities to return that year. A NOTAM closing Alton Bay was still active until 7:00 am that morning.

We finally get to the runway, but have to wait another 30 to 40 minutes with the engines burning 400 lb of fuel an hour. It’s happened to us that we get a clearance, load the passengers, and start up.

If your flight needs to get out early in the morning, the airplane should be hangared overnight and pulled out just before departure. Practice takeoffs and landings on contaminated runways – Just because the runway at your airport has residual snow or slick spots doesn’t mean you have to cancel your flight lesson.

We originally planned a flight to Vermont for lunch at the Red Mill Restaurant located alongside the magnificent grass runway at Basin Harbor (B06). Softened by excessive rain, the runway was NOTAMed closed. Unfortunately, the close confines of the MAAM hangar made getting a good photo of the unique artifact quite challenging.

I checked the hangar and had no bulb in my parts cabinet. I called the clearance delivery number on the OXB NOTAM but they gave me another number to call. I was thinking I was going to be vectored for runway two seven but she seemed content to send us out over the ocean. New bulb installed and checked, we are ready to go!
