Even stable airmass of constant 20 knot winds as it traverses over uneven terrain will cause eddies or burbles, or “potholes in the sky” that will “involuntarily” move the aircraft in its various axes.

A quick way to estimate the correct descent rate for a 3-degree glidepath is to multiply your groundspeed by five. Flying at 60 knots? For example, it’s good practice to add a few knots to V-ref when landing in gusty conditions. So, for a stall speed of 50 knots, the reference airspeed would be: 50 x 1.4 = 70 knots.

As we turned to intercept the localizer, the winds were 360 at 53 knots at 2,000 feet, according to our wind vector on the primary flight display. First off, in order for 343’ per nautical mile to have any useful value, I’ve got to convert it to something I can use, (i.e., feet per minute). Multiply 1.5 Woah, can my Warrior do that?

With a screaming tailwind, I was seeing a groundspeed of 185 kts at 6,500 feet. This had the effect of a rapid reduction of airspeed (to 80 knots) as the autopilot fought to maintain altitude. On the other side of the wave, the airspeed increased to 150 knots. I was airborne in roughly one hour. hours flight time.
