Additional Aircraft Speed Categories Ground Speed (GS) Groundspeed is the actual speed of the airplane over the ground. Its important for jet aircraft flying at high speeds. Its mainly used for structural calculations and testing. It is the True Airspeed (TAS) adjusted for wind. The Mach number is displayed on the Machmeter.

Here’s a video of a 182 flipping in 30 knot winds at Las Vegas (with jet blast the deciding factor). It was fun doing over 200 knots groundspeed over Rawlings until I realized a solid wall of thunderstorms had formed between me and home, and there were 35 knot winds below. What to do?

Our groundspeed was a meager 72 knots as we descended on the glideslope. The sounding analysis depicted a low-level jet maximum at 2,500 feet. My first inclination was to proceed onto Charlotte at 4,000 feet, but I wasn’t sure of what was causing the rough air above.

For example, a pilot of a light twin aircraft, flying at a medium altitude with a tailwind could easily have a groundspeed in excess of 200 knots. Thus, traveling at over 3 nautical miles (NM) per minute, a pilot may not have enough time to receive and decipher a pop-up TFR based on the 100 NM look-ahead and a 10-minute transmission interval.

Below, the boats and jet skis stream across the lake—people enjoying their own adventure this evening as I fly overhead. My Sonex cruises about 130 mph at this power setting, but headed southeast into the wind I am losing an easy 15 mph on my groundspeed. They probably don’t notice me, but I watch them intently.
