Today in Aviation History: First flight of the Boeing XB-15

Vintage Aviation News

The story of the XB-15 begins in 1934, when the USAAC sought to explore the potential of a bomber capable of traveling 5,000 miles while carrying a 2,000-lbs payload at speeds of 200 mph. On July 30, 1939, it achieved a significant milestone by lifting a 31,205 lbs payload to an altitude of 8,200 feet.

Horizon Aircraft is developing the first 800km range hybrid eVTOL aircraft

Aerotime

Horizon Aircraft During the take-off and landing phases of flight, the wing surfaces can transform from a smooth horizontal flying surface into a stabilizer, housing 14 fans that provide the lift for vertical flight – five embedded on either side of the main wing, plus a further two mounted either side within the forward canard wings.

Nothing Small About It

Plane and Pilot

Meaningful weight conservation comes from the elimination of a spar overlap a two-piece wing would require plus the one-piece design is easier to build accurately. The airfoil is a Harry Riblett shape, giving modernized flow separation on the leading edge for a soft stall yet with good lift and drag performance.
