It wasnt until I started flying professionally that I needed to balance realistic fuel planning with payload and just a dash of bargain hunting. Obviously, the number one priority when preflight planning is a safe fuel load, but being able to extract a useful payload out of the aircraft is part of why we play the game.

Using the Flights tab in ForeFlight—pro tips

Towards the top of the Flights tab you’ll see a two-position button for ETD or ETA (requires a Performance Plus plan). This makes it easy to file a flight plan with the perfect ETD. In the Route section of a flight, tap the 3D button in the bottom right corner of the map.

I also departed with the minimum amount of fuel I was comfortable with (airlines use this strategy to increase performance and/or increase payload capacity). Bad data caused by turbulence, turns, and other anomalies was discarded. We like to keep our flights under 3 ½ hours so we can stretch, get a snack, and use a restroom.
