Much work was needed around replacing or fabricating part missing from the firewall-forward area. As we reported in January 2024 , this aircraft arrived at the museum nearly 14 years ago and has required a lot of manpower to get to its current state.

Stubbornly, I firewalled the black knob. —it seemed the stick got a little heavier. I added some more throttle, but there was no change in power and I absolutely needed more back pressure on the stick. But the RPM had not budged since rolling into the groove, and now I almost needed both hands to keep the nose up.

The engine was replaced with a newly overhauled R-2800-43/51 by Anderson Airmotive, and the entire firewall forward was overhauled. This original Corsair, with a rich and ongoing history, had its wings and control surfaces removed and recovered using Stits Polyfiber.

I did give the firewall and gear a once over after taking a peek at the runway for miscellaneous parts that may have been left behind. I did my typical couple of swipes up nose trim then somehow got slow. It was a very firm plant but the wheels stayed on and I think I only lost one filling, kidding.
