On the 25th of November 2024, a Boeing 737-400 crashed on final approach to Vilnius airport with one fatality. With a temperature of 1C and a dew point of -1C, the likelihood of serious structural icing on approach was low. Tower has still not heard from the aircraft but it is still clearly visible on radar on approach.

Even stable airmass of constant 20 knot winds as it traverses over uneven terrain will cause eddies or burbles, or “potholes in the sky” that will “involuntarily” move the aircraft in its various axes.

When I tuned the AWOS (automated weather observation system) at Saratoga Springs, the transmitter broadcast a repeating statement about the AWOS being unavailable. (We It just didn't have any useful information to transmit.) Ground team!

This year, a promising weather forecast featuring high freezing levels (expected to be 9,000+ feet) led to a decision to fly myself. The day before departure, satisfied that days of consistent weather forecasts reasonably assured a successful flight, I cancelled the rental car reservation. So that was of no help to me.

I won't blame the airline for the delay as aircraft and weather issue are beyond their control. The weather at Penang was quite nice. Some weather along the way but we managed to avoid them. December is quite common for bad weather as it is considered the monsoon period. The taxi to the runway took around 5 minutes.

With gusty winds forecast along the eastern seaboard on October 11, I let the weather prognostic chart suggest a different course. As I passed Kelley's Island, wind streaks in the water out of the southwest indicated a wind of six to eight knots, exactly as forecast. Winds aloft tore at the observation deck with unexpected vigor.

But getting there from Rochester, NY is never a simple task and not only requires the runway to be open with favorable conditions, but the weather between here and there must be amenable to a six hour round trip there and back again. With as much as 25 knots of tailwind, we made the flight from Sodus to Alton Bay in only two hours.
