For ferry flights, two 410-gallon tanks could be installed in the bomb bay, giving the bomber a 3,400-mile range. Flying for merely a few hours in light to moderate turbulence made me appreciate the pilots that wrestled these machines for more than eight hours while keeping their assigned position in formation.

NASA used the aircraft for wake turbulence studies, but in 1977, it was converted to its Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) configuration and began its important job of ferrying the Enterprise orbiter. It flew 70 of the 87 ferry missions, including 46 of the 54 post-mission ferry flights from Dryden to the Kennedy Space Center.
