Skidding across the field, the B-17 veered off the runway and crashed into another B-17. A young Art Lacey before the ferry flight. Upon landing, SAAF 1723 ran off the runway and collided with a brick building. With no other options, Lacey prepared for a wheels-up landing.

There, it was to be repurposed as a passenger-carrying aircraft for tourist flights and air safaris in Zimbabwe in southern Africa.

The drop zone at an airshow consists of concrete runways and taxiways, expanses of ground between the two that may contain ditches or drainage culverts, landing lights, directional signage, and other obstacles to avoid.
