Spanish airline Iberia has officially presented the first Airbus A321XLR aircraft to have entered commercial service. The aircraft, registered as EC-OIL, has been conducting revenue familiarization flights within Europe since November 6, 2024, but made its public debut during a media event at Iberia’s La Muñoza facilities near Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) on November 13, 2024.

An appeals court ruled last week that the American and JetBlue Northeast Alliance (NEA) was indeed anti-competitive , shooting down American’s attempt to overturn the original decision. For the first segment of my two times to Latin America review trip , I flew LATAM’s Boeing 787-9 business class on the 7hr25min overnight flight from Miami (MIA) to Santiago (SCL). I’ve gotta say, LATAM offers a solid business class product, easily the best in South America. The airline has comfortable business class seats with direct aisle access, friendly service, tasty meals that are served efficiently, exceptional bedding, and extensive entertainment.

It has been an intense week for Virginia-based hybrid-electric aircraft startup Electra. On November 13, 2024, Electra revealed the design of its future EL9 ultra short takeoff and landing hybrid-electric nine-seater aircraft. The EL9 uses blown lift technology to land on runways as short as 150 feet (45 meters), which would even enable it to land in unconventional spots such as football fields and parking lots.

Etihad Airways has announced its latest financial results for the nine months ending on September 30, 2024. The headlines of the results show that the Abu Dhabi-based carrier achieved a profit after tax of AED 1.4 billion ($368 million), a number that represents a significant increase of 66%, up from AED 814 million ($222 million) during the same period in 2023.

Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific is reportedly looking to sign a new deal for aircraft to renew its long-haul fleet. The company has said that it is looking at a variety of options, which could span from the Boeing 787 to the 777X. This follows a recent order from the airline to replace its medium-haul fleet, meaning this latest move is an expected follow-up to finalize the renewal of its entire fleet.

After reports of a Spirit Airlines flight being struck by gunfire , ABC News has reported that a JetBlue flight from Haiti to New York JFK International Airport was also hit by a bullet. JetBlue reported to ABC that on Monday, a post-flight inspection revealed that Flight 935 from Port-au-Prince Airport (the same airport where the Spirit flight was struck) had also been struck by a bullet.

LOT Polish Airlines has made several exciting announcements over the past year or so, including plans to refresh Boeing 787 cabins , growing the fleet by around 50% , and also opening a lounge outside of Poland for the first time. British eVTOL developer Vertical Aerospace has conducted the first untethered flight of its VX4 prototype, kicking off Phase Two of its development program. Until now Vertical Aerospace had conducted piloted flight tests, but with the aircraft always tethered to the ground by a cable. In July 2024, the United Kingdom’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approved an extension of Vertical Aerospace’s testing activities at its Cotswold Airport (GBA) facilities, located in the southwest of England.

On Thursday, November 14th, Wheels Up revealed that it has closed on approximately $332 million in revolving financing from the Bank of America. The company also announced that it closed on the acquisition of GrandView Aviation's fleet of light aircraft. This includes the acquisition of a mix of 17 Embraer Phenom 300s and Embraer Phenom 300Es. It also includes the related maintenance assets and customer programs from GrandView Aviation.

In early 2024, American announced some positive changes to the AAdvantage program , to be rolled out throughout the year. Among these were plans for it to be possible to redeem systemwide upgrades online, rather than having to call up the airline. Several weeks ago, the Fort Worth-based carrier started rolling this out as a trial. There’s now an exciting update, as the new feature has been fully rolled out for all eligible AAdvantage members.

Malaysia Airlines has not served the US since 2014, opting to leave its code on fellow oneworld partner carriers flights. In 2019, the country of Malaysia was downgraded to a Category 2 status by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and at that point, was not allowed to launch any services to the US. This was only true for three years, as Malaysia regained its Category 1 status in 2022.

More than 97 percent of Allegiant Airlines’ 1,300 pilots have authorized their union to hold a strike vote even though the airline has offered them a 70 percent pay hike over the next five years. Teamsters Local 2118 said the increase isn’t enough to bring Allegiant pilots to the levels they need. “Allegiant pilots are some of the most overworked and underpaid in the airline industry,” the union said in a statement.

A Boeing 737-400F has been destroyed after it caught fire in flight and was forced to make an emergency landing in Sao Paulo. The aircraft, operated by all-cargo airline Total Linhas Aereas was operating a domestic cargo flight from Vitoria to Sao Paulo when the crew received a cargo fire warning, forcing the emergency landing. Flight number TTL5682 departed from Vitória–Eurico de Aguiar Salles International Airport (VIX) on November 8, 2024, for a routine cargo flight to Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos

Located at the historic Avro site in Woodford, Stockport, the museum commemorates the centennial of Avro’s founding at this site, where iconic aircraft like the Lancaster Bomber were built. Hainan Airlines announced that its low-cost subsidiary, Urumqi Air, plans to acquire 40 C909 regional aircraft, formerly known as the ARJ21-700. Deliveries are scheduled to occur between 2025 and 2032, pending shareholder approval. Urumqi Air currently operates a fleet of 15 Boeing 737-800s, according to ch-aviation data. The addition of the C909s will support the regional capacity of the Xinjiang-based carrier and align with China’s push to promote domestically-produced aircraft.
