Turkish Airlines is preparing to launch a four-weekly new service from Istanbul (IST) to Santiago de Chile (SCL), starting on December 18, 2024. The new route will be an extension of its existing service to Sao Paulo-Guarulhos (GRU), Brazil, making use of 5th Freedom rights, which allow carriers to fly and carry passengers between two countries other than their own.

Last Friday, twenty passengers boarded an AirAsia A320 in Hong Kong and had no idea where they would end their journey. The group was absolutely clueless about their destination and only discovered where they were going at 30,000 feet, somewhere between Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur.

Delta Air Lines announced, on September 20, 2024, its 2025 Transatlantic summer schedule, which will be its largest ever and include a number of new routes between the US and Europe. In particular, the US carrier will be adding new nonstop services from Boston-Logan (BOS) to Barcelona (BCN), thrice weekly, and four times per week to Milan Malpensa (MXP).

FIFI, one of only two World War II B-29 bombers still flying, will be based at The Museum of Flight Sept. 25-29 for rides and ground tours. The historic Superfortress is scheduled to arrive at the Museum on Sept. 22 at approximately 2 p.m. Ride flights and ground tours on the ramp next to the Museum’s East Parking lot will begin on Sept. 25. One pilot died and another was uninjured after the midair collision of two warbirds in Lancaster, California early Sunday afternoon. The FAA confirmed the Yak 52 and Nanchang CJ6 came together over the city and the planes both came down in developed areas. The CJ6 pilot died at the scene and the Yak pilot reportedly walked away without a scratch. The accident occurred about 12:50 p.m. and no further details of the circumstances were released.

Data from the relocation of 24 Air Traffic Controllers in late July shows that over 800 flights were delayed in less than two weeks at Newark Airport. While the initial disruptions to operations seen in late July and early August have subsided, a few delays have been reported even in September, caused by the FAA's staff relocation.

About half of Textron’s Wichita employees were scheduled to go on strike just after midnight today after rejecting the company’s latest contract offer on Sunday. About 5,000 members of the Machinists’ Union turned down Textron’s offer of a 26 percent wage increase over four years and a $3,000 annual lump sum bonus. Last summer I had the golden opportunity to fly a single-engine airplane, not once, but twice, round trip to Wittman Regional Airport (KOSH) in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The first was a solo IFR trip in my 1976 Cessna 177B Cardinal to attend the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) competition. The second, two months later, was an invitation to fly IFR to EAA AirVenture and back in my friend Jim’s turbocharged Mooney 201.
