Today May 18, 2024, five years after their successful mission in 2019, the D-Day Squadron – the American contingent of Douglas C-47 and DC-3 transports is expected to depart Waterbury-Oxford Airport (KOXC) in Oxford, Connecticut and head out across the North Atlantic along the original Blue Spruce route. Once they complete the flight the fleet will participate in events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasions and 75th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift.

Triple ace and aviation legend Brig. Gen. C.E. Bud Anderson died Friday at his home in Auburn, California, at the age of 102. Anderson earned 16 kills in the European Theater during the Second World War and The New York Times says he was the last of the triple aces of his era. He reportedly died in his sleep. Anderson was a P-51 pilot in the Second World War assigned to the 357th Fighter Group and flew with Brig.

Today, we have lost a legend, an American icon. The passing of one of our greatest WWII aces leaves us mourning the loss of an honorable and exceptional man. Brigadier General Clarence E. “Bud” Anderson made the most of his one lifetime, and we are fortunate to have had our lives touched by his. Bud, as everyone affectionately called him, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 102.

On May 9, an Air France Boeing 777-200, with registration F-GSPE and operating flight AF-21 from Los Angeles, CA (USA) to Paris Charles de Gaulle (France), experienced an emergency. The aircraft was about 120 NM northwest of Montreal, QC (Canada) when the crew declared an emergency due to smoke in the cockpit and decided to divert to Montreal. Fortunately, the aircraft landed safely in Montreal about 25 minutes after the emergency was declared, and there were no reported injuries.

A Transnusa Airlines ground crew member fell from the main boarding door after the ground crew had removed the boarding stairs early. At Jakarta SoekarnoHatta International Airport (CGK) on May 13, the ground agent was talking with the crew finalizing departure paperwork when the ground handlers, presumably Jasa Angkasa Semesta (JAS) as branded on the stairs, removed them with the aircraft door still open.
