If you’re a frequent flyer in the United States, you’re probably familiar with what a mess boarding a flight can be. It starts 30-50 minutes before departure, there’s a lot of yelling from the gate agent, people crowd around as if it’s a competition to see who gets on first, and then a bunch of bags often have to be gate checked. Only a few aircraft embody the spirit of innovation and experimentation like the Sikorsky S-72, known as the Rotor Systems Research Aircraft (RSRA). Developed for NASA and the United States Army, this experimental compound helicopter took to the skies for the first time on October 12, 1976, in Stratford, Connecticut. This flight highlighted the aircraft’s potential for high-speed flight in hybrid configurations and set the stage for future advancements in rotorcraft technology.

I have more travel planned in the coming weeks, so stay tuned on that (though first I have to get caught up on trip reports!). On the points & travel front, this week United revealed an incredible international expansion, American and Hyatt announced changes to their partnership, the Park Hyatt L

Carburetor icing might seem like it’s just a cold-weather issue, but it isn’t. It can catch you unprepared on a warm, humid day. While you might think of ice on wings or control surfaces, it can actually form inside your engine, and restrict both airflow and power. The hard part is that it creeps in slowly, so by the time you notice a drop in RPMs or a sluggish throttle, it could be too late.
