Why Aircraft Sometimes Takeoff Without Retracting Their Landing Gear

Simple Flying

A typical takeoff on an airliner looks something like this - the pilot-flying (PF) lines up their jet on a runway, and the pilot-monitoring (PM) receives clearance from the tower controller to depart. The PF advances the throttles slowly and checks the engine gauges to ensure that both motors are stable. Once this is confirmed, the PF hits the TOGA (Take-Off/Go Around) switch, propelling the aircraft down the runway while the PM watches the instruments.
