On June 15, 1985, during the second stop off in Beirut, a 23-year-old US Navy diver called Robert Stethem was dragged to the plane’s open door and executed with a gunshot to the head. His body was thrown down onto the tarmac below. However, the hijackers ignored Captain Abate’s advice and insisted that the flight was possible.
