Wet Runways, Crosswinds & High Altitudes: A Look At The Testing New Aircraft Must Undergo

Simple Flying

If there are any discrepancies, the jet will be subject to additional flight testing. As the industry has significantly innovated over the past few decades, modern aircraft are tested across a variety of scenarios to ensure that they operate safely and properly.

50 years and counting – marking half a century of Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport

Additionally, demand for air travel soared in the post-war years, going on to reach even higher levels once the jet age arrived in the late 1950s. The airport’s original plans called for five similar terminal buildings, all built in the central area between the runways.

A United Boeing 767’s Dramatic Go Around In Zurich

One Mile at a Time

In the video, the aircraft can be seen trying to land on runway 28, which is the airport’s shortest runway, at just over 8,200 feet in length. According to the user who uploaded the video, there was no crosswind at the time of this go around, but the runway was wet. Was this just some freak incident?

Managing the wind

Air Facts

I did a checkride in 30 knot winds in the flatlands of Kansas, almost straight down the runway. Here’s a video of a 182 flipping in 30 knot winds at Las Vegas (with jet blast the deciding factor). I’ve landed in strong winds enough times that 30 knots can seem routine, as long as it’s reasonably aligned with the runway.

Simulated Austria Is Wild, Wonderful

The CRJ is interesting to fly with a lot of trimming required as it’s a long-bodied jet with a large swing either side of the CG. I mean, all jets I have flown are like that, but this is fairly sensitive to pitch, power, and flap configuration—all requiring lots of trimming. With a lighter corporate jet, that is powerful.

Flight Sims for the Win: It’s All About Repetition and Drill

If utilizing Runway 17 with left traffic, the crosswind turn will be heading 080, downwind 350, base 260, etc. Don’t accept the excuses of “I can’t fly if I can’t see the runway,” or “I can’t feel the airplane.” Then the CFI should increase the winds so they are 10 knots (or more) above the demonstrated crosswind component.
