Don’t depend on NOTAMs to provide up-to-date information on soft field conditions. High-wing aircraft might need more power or pitch to arrest the descent.

Groundhog Day at Alton Bay

A NOTAM closing Alton Bay was still active until 7:00 am that morning. As expected, the NOTAM closing the ice runway did expire and no new notification replaced it. In the descent, wind direction rotated counterclockwise until it became a direct southerly crosswind. "Wakey-Wakey, Eggs and Bakey" It almost did not happen.

I was intrigued by what appeared to be a grass crosswind runway at North Bass Island, but no such runway is listed in official publications. The latter explained why the runway lights were NOTAMed out of service.) This airport is a mere 1.4 miles from the Canadian border and I was mindful of my position as I circled the island.
