On July 25, 1944, Bf 109 G-6 160756 was on a formation ferry flight with fifteen other Bf 109s over northern Italy from Maniago, in the foothills of the Italian Alps, to Ghedi, 85 kilometers (53 miles) east of Milan. Route of Darbois formation ferry flight (blue), and his escape route (red).

Over the years, the plane became a local legend, with kids getting to play inside the cockpit, and many local teenagers made their first paychecks filling gas under the wings of the old bomber. In 1992, he started work for Transairco, a Beechcraft dealership, as an assistant aircraft salesman and demo/ferry pilot. One such customer was Breitling, and it was during a ferry flight that Albinati first met Breitling CEO Théodore Schneider. Albinati would often fly new King Airs from the US to customers in Europe.
