Alaska Flight Diverted After Pilot “Not Qualified” to Land Aircraft

Flyertalk

When we were about to descend into Jackson (literally they already told to prepare for descent), the pilot got on the overhead and said: ‘Hey, I’m really sorry folks but due to me not having the proper qualification to land in Jackson Hole, we need to divert to Salt Lake City, Utah.

Lufthansa Boeing 747-8 makes heavy landing in Los Angeles: video

Aerotime

However, as the aircraft crossed the runway threshold, the footage appears to show the aircraft making little attempt to arrest its rate of descent or initiate a flare by raising its nose to bleed off any excess airspeed before it touches down. It departed LAX at 16:06 local time and landed in Frankfurt at 11:14 the following morning.

Getting Even

Plane and Pilot

I was still in a pretty rapid descent. While still in a descent, soon to crash into the trees, I turned to look. Settling down, buckling my belt, and enjoying my climb back to 3,000 feet, I got to thinking about whether I could have slowed or stopped my descent with the trim tab. I was in a controlled descent.

Hail Damage to Austrian Airlines A320

Fear of Landing

The flight seemed routine until the flight crew started the final descent from 34,000 feet. While the aircraft was flying at a ground speed of 453 knots (about 840 kilometers per hour), countless hailstones battered the fuselage, engines, and cockpit windows. There were 173 passengers and 6 crew on board.

Airspeed & Vertical Speed

Plane and Pilot

Can we simplify life by only talking about things that are actually displayed in the cockpit? For example, in a 200-feet-per-minute descent, a typical light plane will only gain a little speed. So what do we do with energy management? Even better, can we just use the underlying ideas and ignore this abstract term?

Air Facts

My phone chime woke me up from a deep sleep hours later and I headed back to the cockpit to relieve the Captain so he could get some well deserved sleep. Arriving at the flight deck door, I performed the normal cockpit entry procedure but received no response. They relayed that only pilots in full uniform could be in the cockpit.

How fortunate were the passengers and crew of Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 that the door blew out at a lower altitude rather than during cruising!

Ask Captain Lim

In the instant case, the crew were caught by surprise when the cockpit door also blew open. An NTSB official was annoyed as headlines accused Boeing of keeping this cockpit door opening a secret. Well, this is not unique as it is common in all Boeing or Airbus airliners. Apparently, not many aircrews are aware of this.
