I don’t have such a story since I am always diligent about minimizing my exposure to adverse weather when I am the pilot in command (PIC). While we were sitting in the airplane on the morning of the flight, the pilot received his IFR clearance, which kept us on the eastern route. The ice began to melt.

The fast jets and faster-talking controllers can be intimidating. Pilots must meet equipment and certification requirements and have ATC clearance to enter. These simpler classes cannot handle major international airports’ constant high-speed jet traffic. Your IFR clearance authorizes you to fly your planned route.

This rating does require the pilot to log 50 hours of cross-country time as pilot in command (this is waived for Part 141 instruction). Each pilot can set their own personal minimums, and many IFR-rated pilots continue to fly on an IFR clearance in VFR conditions. Little tolerance for repeat lessons here.

A controller who withholds or issues a late descent clearance is also to blame. Pilots seem to have a compulsion to comply, and doing so reinforces the controller’s errant behavior under the auspices that if nothing bad happens, the aircraft must be capable of doing it. The response from the PIC was, “we know it.”
