A controller who withholds or issues a late descent clearance is also to blame. The reason why the crew operated the aircraft outside of limitations and continued an unstable approach that resulted in an accident, was that they were racing another jet to the runway. The response from the PIC was, “we know it.”

A pair of women waiting at the operations building had chartered the private jet. As I finished loading our baggage into the Warrior, a loud roar overhead announced the jet going missed on the approach. Either way, we never saw the jet go overhead in the clouds, we only heard it. I was surprised by the lack of delay.

Once the rain relented, we staggered our departures and called for our IFR clearances on the ground. Despite those ground clearances, we found that the ceiling above our home airport was high enough to accommodate VFR departures with airborne clearances. Unfortunately, they had miscalculated, and no amount of brake action and thrust reversers could keep the jet from plowing into the snow at the end of the runway. Some approaches even require specialized pilot training to receive clearance. No one was badly injured, but the aircraft was damaged substantially.
