MRPV is closer to San Jose’s city center than MROC but has a shorter (5,905-foot) runway and restricted hours of operation. In the case of tech stops, arrival cards are not needed, and CIQ clearance is not required so long as crew/passengers do not embark/disembark. No fees are associated with CIQ clearance in Costa Rica.

At Shefferville , the weather was really bad in rain and landed via the RNP runway 17… the airport was completely empty ! ATC assigned runway 18 and landed. Climb 16’000ft on runway heading 36, squawk 6230 USA here we come !

I had already fueled and readied the Warrior for departure, it was just a matter of pulling her out of the hangar. We departed Sodus VFR and contacted Rochester Approach for our instrument clearance. After leaving the theater, we stopped for a quick dinner and continued on to the Williamson Sodus Airport. All went according to plan.

I answered in the affirmative, received my clearance, and was given a climb to 6,000 feet as the rain streaked over my windscreen. Shouldn't he have my full clearance? After warming the oil I taxied for runway two and picked up my super secret squawk code to get out with the TFR in place. I contacted Asheville ground to pick up my clearance but it was not on file. That’s odd.

We made an IFR departure that morning on runway 16 and climbed above the ceiling in short order. But I accepted the clearance knowing that I could change it with a local Approach control like Syracuse. We broke out right at the missed approach point which is much too high and close to the runway threshold to make a normal landing.

I was escorted outside by a docent who was supposed to have led the 2:30 pm Reserve Hangar tour, but was available because no one signed up for it. In a prior telephone conversation with the Rockliffe Flying Club, I was assured that I could pick up my IFR clearance in the air from Ottawa Terminal and planned to do exactly that.
