Due to the congestion, authorities are implementing restrictions to accommodate for the influx, which is affecting general aviation (GA). Slots may be requested up to 14 days in advance, and requests are submitted in general aviation clearance request (GCR) format. Once approved, slots are valid for +/- 15 minutes.

It’s recommendable to double-check if the slot requirement is extended after day 29 of October when Notam becomes ineffective for slots.

Customs San Jose Airport now has a dedicated general aviation terminal with onsite Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ). In the case of tech stops, arrival cards are not needed, and CIQ clearance is not required so long as crew/passengers do not embark/disembark. No fees are associated with CIQ clearance in Costa Rica.

Prior Permission Required (PPR) is currently in place for general aviation at SABE – a joint-use civil/military airfield – due to airport and aircraft parking congestion and since this is a primarily domestic airport. All standard CIQ procedures must be followed – including customs/immigration clearance.
