Using the VASI is crucial as it gives you safe obstruction clearance within 10 degrees of either side of the runway centerline and around four nautical miles from the runway threshold. The PAPI provides safe obstruction clearance within plus or minus 10 degrees of the extended runway centerline and 3.4 nautical miles.

The image at the beginning of this section is an example of an RNAV approach plate for Monterey Regional, California. The minima table lists the DA and Height Above Threshold for each type of RNAV approach. Lets look at each type of approach and see how it works. You wont find any mention of LP+V on an approach plate.

But I accepted the clearance knowing that I could change it with a local Approach control like Syracuse. Once on with Syracuse, I decided to rectify the inefficient routing at the end of my instrument clearance and requested direct to Sodus from the Syracuse VOR. This was not a good setup to manage an approach down to minimums.

Rolling out on final approach, I was surprised to see another airplane stopped right at the runway threshold. Usually, Alton Bay volunteers hold departure traffic significantly farther back from the threshold when other aircraft are about to land. Should that guy be so close to the threshold?" Joe asked.
