KCPC was reporting IFR conditions with a 700’ ceiling and one mile visibility. After a few attempts, Unicom finally answered with a yes, the Saratoga is at the gas pump. Unicom also confirmed the weather was still showing a 700’ ceiling with one mile of visibility. Tuning in the AWOS, I heard an unpleasant surprise.

By now, it was dark and the weather in Gaithersburg had deteriorated with fog and low cloud ceilings. Over the last three years, The Bear has expressed great interest in visiting Alton Bay, the only FAA-authorized ice runway in the continental United States. A very brief 2022 season for the ice runway eliminated opportunities to return that year. The Bear was furious that she missed out. The Bear and me flying to Alton Bay!

Closer to South Bass Island, the Put-In-Bay Airport (runways 3-21) appeared along the southeastern shore. However, the memorial is at least a mile from the end of the runway and once I could visualize the geometry of its placement, it was obvious that a normal pattern could be flown between the column and the airport without conflict.
