Approaching the Green Mountains of Vermont, the ceiling began to close back up. This meant that there would be no getting into Sodus unless the ceiling lifted.

Groundhog Day at Alton Bay

Weather conditions on Groundhog Day were better than the week prior, characterized by a high ceiling and no thin screen of clouds hiding the ground from view. Alton Bay's floating bandstand about 100 feet south of the runway threshold. In the descent, wind direction rotated counterclockwise until it became a direct southerly crosswind.
