Hawker Accident at Aspen On February 21, 2022, the crew and four passengers aboard a Hawker 800 nearly lost their lives when the twin-engine business jet sailed off the end of Runway 33 into soft snow at Aspen Pitkin County Airport (ASE), Colorado, during its takeoff run. At around 7:47AM local time, the jet began its takeoff roll on runway 19R, and once the jet reached a high speed, multiple tires burst on the right hand main gear. This caused the crew to reject the takeoff at a speed of over 150 knots, which is very close to the plane’s takeoff speed. However, please stop on the runway.

Zürich Airport has six runways (10/28, 14/32 and 16/34). Generally speaking, during the day with calm winds, runway 14 is used for arrivals and runway 28 is used for departures. However, when there are strong (over 8 knot) winds from the west or north, runway 32 is the preferred runway throughout the day, with 34 for heavies.

Left downwind on a blustery day with live weather actually shows a virga burst over the field, with local winds gusting 36 knots, making for some extreme conditions in such a tight canyon. On the 9th of August 2023, a VX4 crashed at Cotswold Airport in Gloucestershire during a test flight over the runway. The prototype lifted off, hovered and flew at a speed of 40 knots before landing. Then the pilot carefully climbed to 30 feet above the runway. But as it passed through 2 to 4 knots, there was a loud POP.

As I listened in to the radio calls, I heard “Cessna November 50788 entering downwind for a full stop on runway 17” and “Twin Cessna November 61237 on final to runway 17”. We were cruising at about the same speed the Cessna could manage which was 105 knots. Since I could see the runway was clear, we went ahead and landed.

According to the official Cherokee Warrior II Information Manual, the recommended approach speed with full flaps is 63 knots. However, on the flight home from Guthrie, I made my approach at exactly 63 knots to the Kentland Municipal Airport (50I) in the midst of a windswept Indiana cornfield.

The Port Meadville Airport features an immaculately paved 5,000 foot long runway, sells fuel appropriate to kerosene guzzlers and air knockers alike, a genuinely nice terminal building with a great view of the ramp, and even maintains the infrastructure for a radio based localizer instrument approach. Sometimes the wind socks at both ends of the runway point in opposite directions! Rapidly approaching cold fronts (or other fronts, e.g. sea breeze fronts). Very well said!

I was listening intently to the ASOS for wind or gusts, letting it repeat 5 or 6 times with the exact same report: 9 kts straight down the runway; no gusts. That was the runway we would use to land. It’s worth noting that Shmulik had a close call in the past: a jet pulled onto the runway in front of him with no radio call.

To request Bravo clearance, call the approach controller when you’re about 30-40 miles out. Learn the typical approaches and altitudes. This is called a ‘push’.

Finding us there, Chief Instructor Mike B commented that we were an "optimistic group" owing to an approaching cold front. We flew at 7,000 feet with as much as a 30 knot tailwind. Final, runway 34, photographed from Two Six Romeo. Two jets and one piston aircraft were queued up to depart from the same runway when we arrived.

The Inevitable Reroute Allentown Approach: "Cherokee Four Eight One, I have an amendment to your routing, advise ready to copy." Right after I saw the city, I was vectored away from it to the northeast and cleared for the approach. Foolish mortal.
