I queried ATC about when to expect the approach clearance and was informed that the Saratoga had appeared to land but the pilot hadn’t contacted ATC to close his IFR flight plan. I would then level off, slow down, dirty up, run a tight circle to land on the opposing runway. The IAF was looming closer. The little voice agreed.

Next you look at NOTAM’s once again and notice that Runways 8R and 26L are closed. And a quick check of the ATIS on your trusty Sporty’s handheld VHF radio reveals that Runways 35 is currently in use. Can I safely land or depart given the density altitude and runway length? Why would anyone want to do that?

Under VFR, the MEF guarantees 100’ obstacle/terrain clearance within that quadrant. Mostly affects runways found next to bodies of water. Above 18,000’ MSL all aircraft set their altimeters to the standard pressure of 29.92. Do you need a taxi clearance from ground control in this area? The common response is 60,000’ MSL.
