Five years later, Surack Enterprises’ footprint in aviation has expanded to include fixed-wing charter flights using various Cessna Citation jets, Cirrus Vision Jet SF50s, and Pilatus PC-12 NGX turboprops. And with a larger aircraft, a new hangar is being built at the company’s FWA (Intl, Fort Wayne IN) base.

Preparations for this trip the night before included: Flight planning to time-out each of the four legs of the planned round trip as well as verification of customs hours (Kingston, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm M-F, Ogdensburg, 8:00 am to midnight every day). Filing three IFR flight plans (KSDC to CYGK, CYGK to CYRO, and CYRO to KOGS).

I was escorted outside by a docent who was supposed to have led the 2:30 pm Reserve Hangar tour, but was available because no one signed up for it. But I also needed to be airborne at 3:00 pm or else amend my flight plan and arrival time with US Customs in Ogdensville, NY. Yes, I missed an opportunity for a one on one tour!

During flight planning, I determined that 8,000 feet would provide the best wind advantage of the available preferred westbound IFR cruise altitudes. Behind me, the other Cherokee (a Cherokee Six) landed and aggressively made for the main commercial hangar building. It must have been the mutton chops. But they don't have to be.

While the air traffic controllers spoke good English, the flight-planning officer on the ground did not. The systems and services are heavily weighted toward airlines and corporate turbines.
