The cutting-edge surface technology is inspired by shark skin and is said to reduce drag and enhance fuel efficiency, hence reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. In doing so, ANA has become the first individual airline to operate both passenger and freighter variants of the Boeing 777 featuring this innovative surface technology.

Japanese airline All Nippon Airways has introduced its first AeroSHARK equipped aircraft with its 777 cargo freighter. The first modified aircraft began scheduled cargo operations on September 2, 2024. The surface film technology, inspired by the structure of sharkskin, reduces drag and enhances fuel efficiency.

Lufthansa Technik AG has announced EVA Air as the first Asian airline to sign for modifications with its drag-reducing and, hence, fuel-saving AeroSHARK surface technology, jointly developed with BASF. AeroSHARK is a functional surface film modeled on sharkskin’s drag-reducing structure.

Following the lead of Lufthansa Cargo and Swiss International Air Lines, EVA Air and All Nippon Airways have become the first Asian carriers to adopt a high-tech aircraft coating that reduces drag by emulating the skin of a shark. All Nippon began operating its first AeroShark-coated Boeing 777 freighter on August 31.
