I launched from runway three-two and pointed for the Snow Hill VOR. Once south of Myrtle Beach I was turned direct Charleston VOR. We finished breakfast and headed to the airport. I had completed the preflight yesterday so all I needed was to sump each tank and mount cameras. On departure I flew runway heading for a good distance.

If you discount the fact that it is missing a flight director, autopilot, and autothrottles, my airplane is better equipped than most airliners I have flown. We navigated using pilotage and occasionally a VOR. I pulled out my backup lawn chair, opened it, and asked him to sit with me in the shade for a while.

West of the Geneseo VOR, I passed high above Silver Lake and the gorge in Letchworth State Park. In the 1930s, Island Airways operated Ford Trimotors on one of the shortest airline routes ever created between what is now Erie-Ottawa International Airport, Kelley's Island, and the Bass Islands.

We were cleared direct to College Park via the Westminster VOR (EMI). The aircraft out of Williamsport eventually got his flight following request fulfilled, but Center made him work for it. Tough room. Airport Incognito While still on with Harrisburg Approach, the inevitable IFR re-route came. Susquehanna River near Harrisburg, PA.

Just north of the Selinsgrove VOR, Harrisburg called with the first change in routing. Among General Aviation pilots, there was great fear that private aircraft would be permanently barred from controlled airspace, particularly around the epicenters of those attacks in New York City and Washington DC.

I filed a route of BRUIN to ART (Watertown VOR) to Kingston to avoid overflying significant portions of Lake Ontario. On the ramp at Kingston with the former airline terminal and control tower. I filed a route from Kingston via the Ottawa VOR (far left of the chart above) then direct to Rockliffe to avoid the restricted areas entirely.

My filed route to Ogdensburg was via YOW (the Ottawa VOR) and IKLAX. I spotted a few traffic targets as they were called out to me, which was easy because they were airliners and quite a bit larger than the average General Aviation aircraft. Though completely unintentional, I liked the effect and kept it.

Tom and I filed via the Rockdale VOR, which was a starting point on the Nobbi Five arrival procedure used in the greater New York area. Cleared to depart behind a commercial airliner, we were inscrutably vectored back and forth across the course to HAAYS, the first waypoint on the procedure. That was a good plan.
