This type of approach is a non-precision instrument procedure that uses ground-based radio signals to guide you safely to a waypoint or the runway, even when visibility is poor. Unlike an Instrument Landing System (ILS), a VOR approach only provides horizontal guidance. Look for the runway once you reach the MDA.

Only a few months earlier, a 747 freighter operated by Atlas Air found itself at the wrong airport in Kansas.

After departure from Leipzig’s runway 26L, the aircraft headed north and then eastwards, climbing to 33,000ft (10,300m) and crossing the German/Polish border at 03:26, around 18 minutes after take-off. However, while ATC had transmitted a landing clearance to the crew of BCS18D, no meaningful response was received.
