Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) clearance is normally available at the LFMN GAT 0800-2100 local. For short-notice fuel uplift requests during night hours, it’s possible to contact Air Traffic Control (ATC), which will contact the fueler to come out. The agent has one hour to arrive.

When I contacted Rochester Approach, the controller came back with, "Are you looking for your clearance to College Park?" I answered in the affirmative, received my clearance, and was given a climb to 6,000 feet as the rain streaked over my windscreen. My halting readback caught the controller's attention.

No hangar facilities available. Airport fuel tanks hold 15,000 gallons with one fuel truck from Air BP. No hangar space available; aircraft will be parked on the taxiway. The airport operates 24 hours a day, but English-speaking Air Traffic Control (ATC) is not available from 2000 to 0500. 24-hour service.

I was escorted outside by a docent who was supposed to have led the 2:30 pm Reserve Hangar tour, but was available because no one signed up for it. In a prior telephone conversation with the Rockliffe Flying Club, I was assured that I could pick up my IFR clearance in the air from Ottawa Terminal and planned to do exactly that.

Volunteer Air Traffic Control Because of its unique geometry, the Alton Bay Ice Runway requires careful coordination on the ground to avoid conflicts. An observation of salt stains on my hangar floor ultimately led to the fire department hosing off the entire 4,800 foot long runway. Still.not cool.
