ATC will let you know the current altimeter setting in their reply. Altimeter 30.02 The best way to do this is through the FAAs AIM (Aeronautical Information Manual). The fourth W (With), can be omitted in your initial call. You dont generally have to listen to ATIS for airports where you dont mean to land.

I generally knew what to expect since this was not my first time in a small airplane. ASA Airplane Flying Handbook can be a great resource. Stay ahead of the airplane in-flight to give yourself time to think and to free yourself for jotting down notes as needed.
